For several years prior to the pandemic, the overachieving artist and public speaker had spent her life traveling on and off. (Heres a sampling: Touring Oprah and MIA alike; leading a Ted Talk; writing a song for Hillary Clintons streaming series, Gutsy.) While that time was beautiful, it distracted me from deeper emotional work that I didnt know I had to do. Sometimes when were in that pain, Gandhi says, we forget that getting past it is possible. After all, pain are the pulsations that remind us were alive. Vibrations (Sony Masterworks, 2022) is just as effervescently escapist as its name implies. Because when the vocalist-percussionist (real name: Kiran Gandhi) came out of isolation, she was a different person: uplifted, vivacious, content. A rush of joy and introspection, Vibrations manages to be everything at once: a psychic rebirth, a lifes plan, a celebration of existence. But mostly, Vibrations is the sound of Gandhi, transcendent storyteller that she is, bringing us together through her own vantage point. Even the albums first lyric is the invitation, Come with me. It opens with the idea of rebirth. The disarming Past Life is, she says, a call to prayer, a mantra that honors the rawness that we all had to go through in the pandemic. The song is satisfyingly tactile in its use of whispers, fluidic synths, earthy bongos, and otherworldly vocals. (Listen closely and youll also hear shakers, claves, crystal bowls, and even hand claps across the album.) Each layer of consciousness is executed mindfully. You could play Past Life backwards and uncover what Im saying in the loop, she notes. The song, written in just six hours, from dusk to dawn in her Downtown LA studio, set the tone for the rest of Vibrations: how healing yourself yields empathy for others.The pandemic was actually a very sacred experience for me, Gandhi says. It was this shared experience, and I think thats really profound. Vibrations is our collective awakening, the relief of shedding our old skin. Its walking into, she says, the greater knowledge that we, as a species, have post-pandemic.

Otay:onii (Lane Shi) is a multifaceted artist originally from Haining, China, currently based in NY. Her artistic practice spans across music, sound design, installation art, and film composition. She is the lead vocalist and keyboardist of the punk spit band Elizabeth Colour Wheel (US).Otays work has received recognition and accolades, including the bronze prize for Best Female Vocalist from Global Music Awards, and Best Sound from the Audiovisual Arts Industrial Incubator Awards. Her recent music video Un deciphered was an official selection at the Silicon Valley Asian Pacific Film Festival. Her installation performance piece Unwrap! debuted at the Ming Contemporary Art Museum in Shanghai in 2021, alongside a series of improvised sound pieces at Himalayas Museum, FanRong Museum, and more.Her critically claimed album NAG was released on ShadowTrash TapeGroup (US) in 2018, MngMng 冥冥 on WV Sorcerer Productions (France+China) in 2020, which was honored No.1 in RYM China session 2021, and her newest record Dream Hacker 夢之駭客, which was released on Bi records (China) in February 2023 and has received attention from press outlets such as Pitchfork (US), NPR (US), and The Threads Radio (UK).Onii left footprints in renowned institutions, venues and festivals such as Harvard University whrb 959fm in 2020 and Currents FM in 2021, SXSW US and Roadburn Festival (Netherlands) in 2023.
